What to Put on a Vision Board

Ten kinds of images and words that make a board meaningful, what to leave off, and a quick checklist before you call it finished.

Printed photos taped to a wall like a moodboard: a sea view, a bedroom, a silk scarf with ballet flats, a morning stretch and a breakfast table

Staring at a blank board is surprisingly hard. You know roughly what you want, but turning a better life into actual pictures can feel vague. The trick is to think in categories. Here are the ten that make the strongest boards, with ideas for each.

You don’t need all ten. Pick the ones that make you feel something, and leave the rest.

1. Places

Where do you see yourself? A city you want to live in, a coast you want to wake up on, a café you’d like to become a regular at. Places are powerful because they’re easy to picture yourself inside.

Tip: choose a photo that shows the feeling of the place, not just the landmark. A table by a window in Lisbon says more than a postcard of a bridge.

2. The feeling you’re after

Some images aren’t about a goal at all; they capture a mood. Morning light on linen. A long exhale. Someone laughing with their head thrown back. These anchor the board emotionally and remind you why you want the rest.

3. Your home

The space you live in shapes how your days feel. Add the reading corner, the plants, the kitchen you’d love to cook in, a colour palette, flowers on the table. Home images are wonderfully practical, because you can start on many of them this month.

4. Work and purpose

What would you love to be doing, and how would you like to feel while you do it? Think workspaces, a project you’re proud of, a skill you’re learning, a moment of you leading or creating. Write a milestone as a sentence: “I launch my own studio.”

There’s more on this in our career vision board ideas.

5. Health and rituals

Not a body you want to have, but rituals you want to live by: a morning walk, real food, eight hours of sleep, a class you’ve been meaning to try. Gentle beats punishing every time.

6. People and love

Who do you want around you? Dinners with friends, a partner, family, a community. If you want to be loved differently (or love yourself differently), find an image of what that looks like in an ordinary moment.

7. Adventures and experiences

Trips, concerts, a road trip, learning to surf, a first solo holiday. Experiences give a board energy and something to look forward to. Our travel vision board ideas go deeper.

8. Style and self-expression

How do you want to show up? The outfit that makes you stand taller, a signature scent, the way you’d like to wear your hair. This isn’t vanity; it’s how you carry the person you’re becoming.

9. Words

Two or three short phrases, written in your own voice and in the present tense:

  • Slow mornings.
  • I trust myself.
  • A home that holds me.
  • More yeses.
  • Rest is part of it.
  • This life is mine to build.

10. Something from right now

This one is often forgotten: add at least one photo from your current life that already feels like the future you want. A good day. A meal you made. A corner of your room in the afternoon sun. It’s proof that the life on your board isn’t fiction; parts of it are already here.

A breakfast table with croissants, lemons and coffee on a sunny terrace by the sea
A photo from a day that already felt right is one of the most powerful things you can add.

What to leave off

A board is as much about what you choose not to include.

  • Things you think you should want. If it doesn’t make you lean in, it doesn’t belong.
  • Other people’s lives, copied whole. Take the feeling, not the exact picture of someone else’s house or body.
  • Anything that makes you feel worse. Comparison has no place on a vision board.
  • Too much. Six to eight images is plenty. More than that and nothing stands out.

A quick checklist

Before you call your board finished, check that it has:

  1. One clear theme you could describe in a sentence
  2. At least one photo from your own life
  3. Images that share a palette
  4. Two or three short phrases in your own voice
  5. A little empty space
  6. A place where you’ll see it every day

Keep it close

Make the board, then live with it.
